A furnace can sound like it is running even when it is not producing heat. The blower may be moving room-temperature air, or the heating cycle may be stopping early. Here are a few safe checks for homeowners in Milwaukee, Waukesha, West Bend, Racine and Kenosha.
First, rule out an emergency
Smell gas? Leave immediately. Do not operate switches or use a phone inside. From a safe location, call your gas utility. We Energies lists 800-261-5325 for natural gas emergencies.
Carbon monoxide alarm sounding? Everyone should go outside immediately and call 911. Stay outside until emergency responders say it is safe to return. Do not wait for a service appointment or try to find the source yourself.
1. Check the thermostat
Select Heat and set the temperature above the current room temperature. Check whether a schedule has lowered the setting. If the fan is set to On, it can move unheated air between heating cycles. Auto normally lets the system control the fan with the heating cycle.
A brief startup delay can be normal. Follow your model’s instructions; air that stays cool after the normal startup period needs further attention.
2. Check the filter and room airflow
A clogged filter can restrict airflow and contribute to overheating. If your filter is safely accessible, follow the owner’s manual to shut the system down and inspect or replace it. Use the specified size and type, follow the airflow arrow, and never run the furnace without its filter. Leave internal panels and components to a qualified technician.
Move furniture or rugs away from return grilles and supply registers. Blocked airflow can contribute to heating problems. If basic checks do not restore heat, arrange professional service.
3. Notice what happens before it stops
Does the fan run continuously, or does the furnace start and stop repeatedly? Is there an error message on the thermostat? If a fault light is visible through a viewing window, photograph its pattern without removing panels. Avoid repeated resets or switching the furnace off and on to force it to run.
When to call for furnace repair
Persistent cold airflow, repeated shutdowns or unusual noises need professional diagnosis. Ignition, flame sensing, airflow and controls can cause similar symptoms; a symptom alone does not identify a failed part. Do not adjust gas valves, bypass safety switches or work on wiring.
